Formatting Your Report

Research papers should follow a consistent format. Some courses will specify a standard format, such as MLA or APA. For this course, you may format your report with the following guidelines:

  1. MS WORD is preferred , but if you need to use MS WORKS, save your work in the rich text format (rtf.). Use the "Save As" command under the file menu to select this format.
  2. Use Times New Roman or Callibri , 12 point font for the body of the text.
  3. Use the Header/Footer feature to make sure that your name is on your paper, along with the page number.
  4. You will be using the academic report manuscript style for this project, such as some of you learned in keyboarding. Use the illustration below as an example.
    1. For the first page, center the title , subtitle (if any), name and date at the top of the page.
    2. If you use headings, make them bold and start at the left margin.
    3. Indent the first line of each paragraph 1/2 inch.
    4. Indent any long quotations (3 or more lines) 1/2 on each side.
    5. Use a superscript number to indicate information quoted or summarized from sources.
    6. Place all notes at the end of the paper.
  5. To format endnotes,
    1. Enter in order of superscript number. Separate each of the following sections with a comma and end the reference with a period. Single space.
    2. Enter the author(s) names in regular order.
    3. Enter chapter, article or web site section titles in quotes.
    4. Underline or italicize book or journal/magazine/newspaper titles, or web site name.
    5. Include the date of publication (spell out months).
    6. Give the page numbers where the information can be found.
    7. For web sites, include the web address (URL) and add the date accessed in parenthesis.
